Cat owners most probably experience a lot of cat spraying in their home. This is when cats lift up their hind leg and start to spray a fluid which is a lot like urine on the surface of a furniture or rug. Cat spraying results in a very unpleasant smell that does not do well for the household or its guests.
Cat spraying is mostly because the cat wants to show his or her presence in a certain area. It is a sort of territorial characteristic that a lot of animals have. Others say that the reason that cats spray is in order to get involved with cats of the opposite gender. Male cats tend to do more spraying than female cats because they have very high testosterone levels. Most owners make this a determining factor in deciding whether to choose a male or female cat.
There are a lot of ways in which to stop your cat from spraying. One is to get them neutered. This is very effective because once the procedure is done, hormone levels decrease and therefore cats will not feel the need to be territorial and the spraying will stop.
However, a good percentage of cats may continue to spray all over your house even after being neutered. If you are one of these unlucky people with a cat that still sprays after neutering, there are a lot of other methods to try.
One is to drug your cat. Of course, this one needs to have the supervision of your veterinarian in order to be sure that you are giving the proper dosage that will not harm your cat. Drugs that calm your cats will mostly be prescribed by the veterinarian in order to give them a mood that would stop their need to spray.
There is also an aerosol spray that can be bought which contains a pheromone that cats can identify with. This is a face pheromone. Cats would often rub their faces on surfaces which is another form of marking their territories. Cat owners would simply apply the areas that the cat has sprayed and when it comes back again, they will be able to smell the pheromone and would not spray that specific surface again.
If all else fail, there are mechanical products available on the market. These products have sensors that detect when a cat is about to get near an area where they spray. The device will instigate a harmless action that would make them scat.
